About Gabriella

Gabriella Bettiga is one of the UK's leading immigration lawyers: a solicitor, advocate, trainer, and published authority on immigration law with over two decades of hands-on practice. She founded MGBe Legal in 2019 with a clear mission, to make expert immigration legal services genuinely accessible without sacrificing quality or rigour.

Her practice covers the full breadth of UK immigration and nationality law: from British nationality matters and EUSS applications and appeals, to business and private immigration, and complex asylum applications and appeals. She has advised individuals, families, SMEs, and large organisations, and represented clients before immigration tribunals at every level.

What sets Gabriella apart is not simply her depth of experience. It is the breadth of roles she holds and has held: practitioner, regulator, trainer, policy contributor, and published academic. This rare combination means that when clients come to MGBe Legal, they are guided by someone who not only knows the rules, but has actively contributed to shaping them.

Qualifications & Academic Background

LLM — University of London, SOAS

Postgraduate Master of Laws with a specialist focus on Immigration Law, Human Rights Law, and Islamic Law. One of the UK's most respected postgraduate legal qualifications.

Solicitor of England & Wales

Fully qualified and regulated solicitor, not merely an immigration adviser. Gabriella meets the highest standard of legal accountability recognised in England and Wales.

Qualified Lawyer — Italy

Dual-qualified: also a registered lawyer in Italy, providing bilingual legal capability for Italian nationals, EU citizens, and international clients.

Professional Accreditations

Gabriella holds the highest possible accreditation under two separate, independently assessed schemes, an achievement held by very few immigration practitioners in the UK.

IAA Level 3 — Immigration Advice Authority (Highest Level)

Regulated at Level 3 by the IAA (formerly OISC), the maximum level of authorisation for immigration advisers in the UK. Accredited at this level since 2010. This means Gabriella is legally authorised to advise and represent clients on the full range of immigration matters, including the most complex cases and tribunal appeals.

AAS Advanced Caseworker — Law Society Immigration & Asylum Accreditation Scheme (Highest Level)

Accredited at Advanced Caseworker level under the Law Society's Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme (IAAS), the Law Society's own gold standard for immigration specialists. This rigorous assessment covers legal practice, professional conduct, drafting skills, and specialist immigration expertise.

Why This Matters: Holding both the IAA Level 3 and IAAS Advanced Caseworker accreditation simultaneously, both at the highest level, is rare in the UK immigration sector. It signals independently verified expertise, professional accountability, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of legal practice. You are not relying on a self-declared specialist. You are instructing someone whose credentials have been formally assessed and awarded.

Government & Professional Roles

Beyond her practice, Gabriella holds and has held senior roles in the institutions that shape UK immigration law itself. Her work across professional bodies and committees reflects a longstanding commitment to improving the quality, accessibility, and fairness of immigration law and procedure.

Tribunal Procedure Committee (Former Member)

ILPA Trustee — Since 2020

Chair — Independent Cost & Funding Adjudicators, Legal Aid Agency (Former Member)

ILPA Journal — Case Notes Editor

Training, Teaching & Examiner Roles

Gabriella is one of the UK's most sought-after immigration law trainers, delivering courses nationally and internationally, and examining the very accreditation schemes that set the profession's standards.

IAAS Examiner — Law Society

Gabriella examines candidates for the Law Society's Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme, the same qualification at which she herself is accredited at Advanced level. Examiner status is awarded only to those with exceptional expertise and professional standing.

ILPA — Regular Trainer

Delivers courses for ILPA members, including programmes for practitioners new to immigration law and specialist topic sessions for experienced caseworkers. As an ILPA Trustee, she is also actively involved in the association's working groups.

DG Legal — Regular Trainer

Collaborates with DG Legal as a specialist immigration trainer, including preparation courses for the Law Society's IAAS Senior Caseworker examination.

HJT Training — Regular Trainer

Works with HJT, one of the UK's leading legal training providers, delivering specialist immigration training to solicitors and advisers.

Law Society — Training Contributor & Guidance Author

Gabriella contributes to the Law Society's expert training materials and supports the drafting of practitioner guidance, helping to ensure that resources available to immigration solicitors and advisers are clear, accurate, and up to date. She also delivers regular training sessions across the Law Society's immigration programmes.

Publications & Thought Leadership

Gabriella is a published author and recognised thought leader on UK immigration law. Her writing and commentary appear in some of the most widely read legal and community publications in the field.

Free Movement

Generally, the UKVI decision letter tells you if you have a right of appeal, a right to an administrative review, or neither. For example, decision on Points-Based System (PBS) visa applications are eligible for administrative review. In contrast, Human Rights or asylum claims may attract a right of appeal.

Londra Italia

Gabriella contributes immigration articles to Londra Italia, the principal Italian-language publication for Italian nationals living in the UK. This bilingual reach directly supports Italian and EU expat clients navigating UK immigration after Brexit.

ILPA Journal of Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law (JIANL)

As Case Notes Editor of ILPA's peer-reviewed quarterly journal (published by Bloomsbury Professional), Gabriella writes articles and curates and edits the journal's case law commentary, placing her at the academic and legal cutting edge of UK immigration jurisprudence.

E-Books & Online Content

Gabriella writes e-books and online educational content on immigration topics, extending her knowledge-sharing beyond the courtroom and classroom to a broader public audience.

Pro Bono Work & Community Commitment

EURO-EXPERT — Pro Bono Consultant

Gabriella served as a pro-bono consultant for the training component of EURO-EXPERT, contributing to the development of cultural expertise training across Europe. EURO-EXPERT is an EU-funded initiative promoting the use of expert witnesses and cultural expertise in judicial processes.

Rainbow Migration — Supervisor

Gabriella worked as a supervisor at Rainbow Migration, the charity supporting LGBTQ+ people who need to migrate to or within the UK. This role reflects her commitment to protecting the most vulnerable immigration clients.

Asylum Aid — Women's Advisory Committee & Trustee (Former)

Gabriella was involved with the Women's Advisory Committee of Asylum Aid from 2008, providing advice on gender issues in immigration. She became a trustee of the charity in 2012, contributing to leadership on asylum support for women.

Women in Refugee Law (WiRL) — Steering Group Member

Gabriella serves on the steering group of Women in Refugee Law, an initiative promoting gender equality and the inclusion of women's voices in refugee and asylum law.

I founded MGBe Legal with the vision of simplifying the immigration process for clients and making high-quality legal services more accessible. I believe in being available to my clients, providing personalised support, and ensuring they receive the best possible advice and representation

Gabriella Bettiga

After more than two decades in immigration law, practising, training, advising governments, editing journals, and contributing to the development of tribunal procedure rules, Gabriella founded MGBe Legal to do something the larger, more impersonal firms rarely manage: put the client genuinely first.

At MGBe Legal, no client is a case number. Every person who contacts the firm receives dedicated attention from a professional who understands the stakes. Whether navigating the complexity of a visa refusal, securing a sponsor licence for a growing business, or supporting a family through the stress of a citizenship application, the commitment is always the same: expert advice, delivered clearly, at every step.

FAQs

1What is IAA Level 3 and why does it matter?
The Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) regulates immigration advisers in the UK across three levels. Level 3 is the highest, authorising advisers to handle the most complex immigration matters including asylum claims, human rights applications, and tribunal appeals. Gabriella has held this accreditation since 2010. Very few immigration advisers hold this level.
2What is the IAAS Advanced Caseworker accreditation?
The Law Society's Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme (IAAS) independently assesses immigration practitioners on their legal knowledge, professional conduct, and practical skills. The Advanced Caseworker level is the highest tier. Gabriella holds both the IAA Level 3 and IAAS Advanced Caseworker accreditations simultaneously, a rare combination that confirms independently verified expertise at the highest level.
3What was Gabriella's role on the Tribunal Procedure Committee?
The Tribunal Procedure Committee (TPC) was established under the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007. It is responsible for the rules governing practice and procedure in the First-tier and Upper Tribunals, including the Immigration and Asylum Chamber. Gabriella previously served as a Government-appointed member of the Committee, having been reappointed. This reflects the exceptional standing she holds within the legal community.
4Does Gabriella work with both individual and business clients?
Yes. Gabriella and MGBe Legal work across personal immigration (visitor visas, work visas, family visas, asylum, citizenship) and business immigration (sponsor licences, skilled worker routes, global business mobility, innovator founder visas). This breadth, at an elite level of accreditation, is rare among UK immigration firms.
5Does MGBe Legal offer advice in Italian?
Yes. As a qualified Italian lawyer who regularly publishes immigration articles in Londra Italia, Gabriella is well placed to assist Italian nationals and EU citizens in both English and Italian.
6How can I book a consultation with Gabriella and her team?
